What-if loop

Anxiety About The Future

Future anxiety can look like planning, but it often becomes repeated prediction without a useful next step. The work is to separate preparation from looping.

Plan

Useful Planning

Creates a clear action, calendar item, message, budget, or decision.

Loop

Future Worry

Repeats predictions without changing what you can do today.

Check

One Question

Ask: "What is the next action this worry is asking for?"

Stop

Close The Tab

If there is no action, park the worry and return to the present task.

The Three-Bucket Method

  1. Action: something I can do today.
  2. Schedule: something I can decide later at a specific time.
  3. Uncertainty: something I cannot solve by thinking harder right now.

When It Gets Stronger

Future anxiety often intensifies when you are tired, overloaded, or trying to make a perfect decision. A smaller next step can be more useful than a perfect prediction.
