Highway Driving Anxiety

Highway driving anxiety often centers on speed, exits, merging, bridges, or fear of panic while driving. This page is not a driving-safety assessment. It gives you a conservative way to observe the pattern and reduce avoidance without pushing beyond safe limits.

Safe

Prioritize Safety

Do not practice when tired, impaired, or highly distressed.

Small

Use Short Segments

Choose one brief, familiar route before harder routes.

Cue

Keep Attention External

Track lane position, signs, and speed rather than body sensations.

Help

Get Skilled Support

A therapist or driving instructor can support graded practice.

A Conservative Practice Ladder

  1. Sit in the parked car and rehearse the route calmly.
  2. Drive a familiar local road with no pressure to continue.
  3. Try one short highway entry and exit with a clear plan.
  4. Stop practice if safety is compromised. Anxiety practice should never override road safety.
